Description

System Evolution introduces the theory and technology behind a regenerative approach to socio-ecological systemic change. When we work on improving systems the tendency is to focus on their functioning (e.g., how to make things work better and more justly, how to better allocate and utilize resources, etc.). In our current societies, however, what we don’t tend to do is actively design with and for evolution. As a result, the institutions that shape and manage the systems that give life to our communities are designed for operational work but not to change themselves. A core inquiry in this course therefore is: How do we effectively engage in system redesign in a way that inherently grows the intelligence and capability for ongoing evolution? This course is specifically designed for practitioners who are currently and actively working on a systemic change effort in a place, be it in connection to bioregional resource management, transportation systems, food/ag systems, finance systems, waste management systems, education, etc. Schedule The System Evolution course consists of eight two-hour Zoom sessions held every other week. Each session includes brief reading material and an assignment applying the session content. The learning experience is greatly enhanced by being part of a study group; we offer support to participants in self-organizing for this if needed.
