Cohort AssignmentAotearoa / New Zealand with In-Person Intensive in Auckland 2023
1. What do you see as your primary work at this stage of your life?

In my current role I am the design lead on public realm projects in Auckland. The primary work I do is co-ordinating design teams to achieve outcomes and benefits for the public relevant to that site, and ensuring those are realised through construction and management.

2. What role do you see as yours to play?

My role spans from the strategic context right through to construction. A large part of my role is to identify and understand the issues and opportunities within a site, set the project brief and challenge the design team to respond to the brief in new and innovative ways.

3. What goals or aims do you have in regard to the above?

There is growing recognition of the importance of landscape architecture and the design of public space in how we live and behave in our environments, yet the benefits are so difficult to quantify/value. I am constantly in a position where I am fighting for more public good investment. I would like to be able to lead design teams were the focus is not only cost, but has a more holistic perspective and understanding of whole of life benefits.

4. Where do you feel your next arenas for personal growth are?

Recently I have realised that since returning to New Zealand from my OE in 2018 I have become complacent, my goal for my personal growth is to put myself out there a bit more and commit to more events, conferences and networking opportunities where I can meet new people and raise my profile.

5. And for professional growth?

In my professional development plan I have identified that I would like to lead/direct major projects. I enjoy large strategic projects because of the wide range benefits they can provide to communities.

6. What have you invested in to get you where you are?

I have invested in my education, I have invested in my values, I have invested in my friends and family, I have invested in travel and experiences and I believe all of these things make me who I am and the perspective and approach I bring to my work

7. What fields of learning and which thinkers have been important in your life?

School - Basic education, social skills, work ethic
University - Landscape Architecture, sociology, analytical thinking, genus loci and sense of place
Work Experience - Practical skills for project delivery

8. Can you frame your philosophy or cosmology of life? What role(s) do humans play in it?

Haven't thought about it too much. I think the role of humans is to support each other to exist in harmony and be able to continue to exist for generations.
