Working Title of The Project (which we will use to refer to it throughout the series)

Woodlands Park Wetland Project

Project Location

Woodlands Park, Essendon, Melbourne VIC Australia

Nature of The Project (e.g. building, new community, economic development, etc.)

Creation of a wetland in an established park to manage storm water runoff, facilitate filtration of water, encourage biodiversity and increases in habitat, as well as providing more green space for community members.

Why do you think this project is appropriate for the course assignment?

We believe this project is appropriate for the assignment because it has been completed with clear sustainability aspirations and is part of a much bigger, Melbourne wide project that's purpose is to build functional green space into communities. We think the project is worthy of comparative study because it's a tried and tested wetland design and is being rolled out all over the city, and affects various aspects of human and non-human life so is trying to do good, but isn't necessarily regenerative. Woodlands Park is the largest green space and second most utilised park in the municipality, and the council has made extra efforts to create waterways within the park. Furthermore, we are interested in the differences between restoration (reaction-based action) and regeneration, and think looking at the status quo model in waterways creation and management will be an effective way to critique this. Therefore, we believe it's a great project for the assignment because wetlands are a part of the city that will actually create change in place; will improve the health of waterways; will offer new spaces for animals; and will impact communities in a long-term way.
