Working Title of The Project (which we will use to refer to it throughout the series)

Omega Regenerative Design Project

Project Location

Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, 150 Lake Drive, Rhinebeck, New York, USA

Nature of The Project (e.g. building, new community, economic development, etc.)

The project examines the sustainable and regenerative practices at the Omega Center for Sustainable Living (OCSL), focusing on the Eco Machine™ for water reclamation and the LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge-certified architecture.

Why do you think this project is appropriate for the course assignment?

The OCSL exemplifies how integrating natural systems into built environments fosters sustainability and community engagement. The Eco Machine™ challenges conventional water treatment systems by mimicking natural processes, thereby promoting mindfulness about the products we use and their impact on water sources.

Additional Useful Information

Innovative Water Reclamation: The Eco Machine™ treats wastewater through a natural process involving plants, bacteria, algae, and fungi, which closely mimics natural ecosystems.
Mindful Consumption: The system encourages users to be mindful of the products they introduce into the water cycle. Unlike conventional plumbing that disconnects users from the environmental impact of their waste, the Eco Machine™ makes this impact visible and immediate.
Sustainable Architecture: The building is one of the greenest in America, meeting the highest green building standards.
Educational Outreach: OCSL offers programs to educate and inspire sustainable practices.
Community Engagement: The center involves local and broader communities in its initiatives, promoting environmental stewardship.
