Cohort AssignmentHybrid In-Person/Online with Intensive in Lisbon, Fall-Winter 2024
1. What do you see as your primary work at this stage of your life?

I'm currently working as a full-time Part 2 Architectural Assistant within the UK at an Architects Practice.

2. What role do you see as yours to play?

I assist Architects with a large variety of tasks across all of the work stages of an architectural project. This is largely requires computer-based 3D modelling and drawing skills across both commercial and residential sectors.

3. What goals or aims do you have in regard to the above?

I aspire to be able to specialise within my architecture career path to become regenerative design and development focused instead of the broad scope that an architect/architectural assistant encompasses - which is me currently. This would ensure that I’m living by my values on a daily basis and are able to practise, gain experience and immerse myself within the regenerative framework’s thinking. I aim to achieve this as I believe it will give me so much pride, passion and purpose in what I do; gaining my love for what I do and mojo back whilst also helping people, places and the planet as part of the process! Therefore, by completing this course, I really hope that it will give me the knowledge, skills, confidence in myself and from others, to be taken more seriously so that I am able to make a net-positive difference.

4. Where do you feel your next arenas for personal growth are?

First and foremost, to be able to make the compassion difference to the world that I hope to, I firstly need to work on my internal mindset to become kinder and more compassionate to myself. After lots of years of study, the pressure, high expectations and intensity got the best of me, and this impacted my naturally joyful, curious and warm soul and spirit to one which was anxious, stressed and low confidence; blocking my ability to communicate myself clearly or think with clarity. Therefore, I really want to ENJOY this process in a calm and controlled manor as an incredibly exciting journey and opportunity of growth. I hope to get rid of my past traumas, take the study into my stride, alongside my full-time job, whilst enjoying a healthy active lifestyle myself that lives and practices regenerative values, without feeling any pressure or strain on any aspects: work, study, mind, body and spirit.

5. And for professional growth?

I hope this course will increase my confidence and allow myself to contribute meaningful, significant, and insightful value to team discussions and the decision making process of architectural projects. This may be at my current practice, in attempt to make them think differently about their approach or through giving me the skills and certification to get a job at a practice that is already more open minded to regenerative thinking. I hope this will enable my innate loving nature, empathy, sensibility, curiosity, open-minedness, ideas-thinking, ability to think of the wider picture/system and creative characteristics and qualities to become my professional strength: instead of sometimes feeling like they are my resistance.

6. What have you invested in to get you where you are?

I completed 7 years of University study (which ended June 2023). This comprised of a 1 year Art Foundation course, which then led me to 4 years of undergraduate study for Architecture, followed by a 2 year Masters course in Architecture. Since then, I have moved from my family's home within a small rural village to my local city, Norwich, to be close to my work, be more sustainable as I don't need a car, gain an understanding of how cities work as well as the people within them by immersing myself within new and wider community activities.

7. What fields of learning and which thinkers have been important in your life?

Biomimicry - Innovation inspired by nature. Key thinkers include Janine Benyus and Michael Pawlyn
Circular economy - Cradle to cradle & Upcyle. Key thinkers include Michael Braungart and William McDonough
Regenerative design and development. Key thinkers include Dominique Hes, Chrisna Du Plessis, Pamela Mang, Ben Haggard, Bill Reed, Maibritt Pedersen Zari, Emmanuel Pauwels, Jason Mclennan
Regenerative Agriculture. Key thinkers include Gabe brown, Josh A Tickell
Climate Action - Greta Thunberg, David Attenborough

8. Can you frame your philosophy or cosmology of life? What role(s) do humans play in it?

I believe humans are here to explore and develop new systemic relationships between all living beings. This starts at the human species with our own human mind, body and spirit and then extends to all living beings, natural minerals, climatic systems and contexts within earth. As the human species’s consciousness is so complex, diverse and unique compared to other living beings it seems only right that we use this to benefit the world’s evolution so that all species can thrive: all life is lived in the best health, happiness, lovingness, harmony and balance together as possible.
