Cohort Assignment | Hybrid In-Person/Online with Intensive in Rwanda, Fall-Winter 2024 |
1. What do you see as your primary work at this stage of your life? | I am a graduate architect, and my work mainly revolves around the design development of various projects in Rwanda. |
2. What role do you see as yours to play? | I see my role as an architect who focuses on the development of public and community facilities in Rwanda. As the country invests in these important buildings, I aim to ensure they are designed to have a positive impact on large communities while also protecting and enhancing the environment. |
3. What goals or aims do you have in regard to the above? | I aim to advocate for better regenerative design practices and to shape how communities perceive and understand these approaches in the built environment. My goal is to learn how to design buildings that go beyond being carbon neutral, focusing instead on creating positive impacts that can help reverse the damage we've done through built environments. |
4. Where do you feel your next arenas for personal growth are? | I believe my next areas for personal growth involve expanding my knowledge beyond design theories. As architects, it’s essential to understand earth sciences, local resources, and available materials to ensure that our design goals align with the realities of our communities. Additionally, I want to focus on utilizing technologies that are contextually appropriate. |
5. And for professional growth? | For my professional growth, I aim not only to practice better architecture but also to become an educator in the field. My future career will enable me to advocate for regenerative design by teaching the next generation of architects. |
6. What have you invested in to get you where you are? | As an emerging architect, I have gone beyond my formal education in architecture by investing time in learning about sustainable design through experiences with established architectural practices. |
7. What fields of learning and which thinkers have been important in your life? | rom a young age, I have been drawn to earth science, art, and culture. Pursuing a career in architecture has allowed me to blend these interests, as each field informs the other in the design and decision-making process. |
8. Can you frame your philosophy or cosmology of life? What role(s) do humans play in it? | Architecture is dynamic; it evolves with communities over time. As architects, we must recognize that our buildings, much like trees, grow and change, for better or worse. While we design spaces with specific purposes in mind, it's ultimately the people who use them who determine their true roles in their lives. For instance, during pandemics or disasters, classrooms intended for learning can become shelters, and playgrounds meant for fun can turn into living spaces. It’s crucial for us as designers to create buildings that are not only environmentally friendly but also adaptable, allowing for diverse uses and celebrating the unique cultural contributions of the people who inhabit them. |
